Did you know it is illegal to drive with your pet unrestrained in your car? Rule 57 of the Highway Code reads “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly... A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”
Failure to comply could lead to a £100 on-the-spot fine if they are seen to be distracting you, whilst failing to pay the fine could lead to a court case and a maximum £5,000 fine. What’s more, insurance pay-outs can be withheld if there is an accident as most insurance policies will not cover a motorist who is found driving with a pet if it is unrestrained.
